How to Make a Native American Style Flute A Northern Spirit Flute In Less Than 5 Minutes!
Rich Dubé demonstrates how to make a Native American style flute out of prepared food grade ABS plastic parts in less than 5 minutes. The Native American Flute is one of the most beautiful instruments I have ever played. I have been making a version of it with my students for the past 8 years. I have been so inspired by the peaceful, healing sound of the instrument and how it engages my most challenging students that I designed this latest version of the flute to take out the difficult work in making them with your students. It is a mid A flute that plays beautifully with other instruments tuned to A440.
I`ll do the best I can. Two things affect the pitch (how low or high) the lowest note a flute will play. The larger the size of bamboo, wood, clay or bone that makes up the tube portion of the flute and the length of the tube. Holes are placed so they can be easily reached by the player. If you take a look at a well tuned flute, you will notice, virtually all of the time, the holes are of different sizes. When you make a hole larger it raises the pitch/tuning of that note/finger hole.
Thank you for the kind words. I want to start by letting you know the size of drill bits I use are specific to this flute and this size of tubing. The hole size will vary depending on the size of your piece of bamboo and where you place the finger holes. The general rule is the smaller the hole the closer you can place the hole to the True Sound Hole. To place the hole farther away from the True Sound Hole, you would end up with a bigger hole to play the same pitch.
thanks you sooooooooo much for the drill sizes i been making bamboo fluts it seems like it don’t sound just right to me maybe im still a little green on this but i love making them will this work on all fluts let me know please and other keys G C D E F THANKS FOR YOUR HELP.

It is so great to hear from you. I’m trying to guess which student you were. Please let me know. I’m thinking I would like to gift you two of the new flutes, one for you and one for your son. There is nothing more beautiful than sharing in making music with our children. I am blessed to be able to do this with my boys. I would be honoured to share that blessing with you.

How do you clean out the inside of the flute so you don’t get bamboo residue in your throat?
