4) Always be very weary when an account is denied, i.e. John Smith’s account of being saved by Pocahontas aka Matoaka, for statements that are preceded by “in reality it is probable”. It was hard to watch any further as the inadequacies abounded and I didn’t want to take too much time showing why watching documentaries isn’t really researching history.
Where to begin… 1) John Smith was not the captain of “a” ship that rolled into Virginia and set up Jamestown. There were three ships actually and he wasn’t the captain of any of them. 2) Powhatan didn’t just sit around and weigh his options. The colonists were attacked almost immediately after landing. They were attacked again less than a month later by no less than 200 natives. 3) Powhatan didn’t order the capture of John Smith. Smith was captured but not upon any specific orders to do so.
