Part One, The Sun Dance Ceremony of the Great Plains Native American Tribes
Featuring Native American Sun Dancer Jimmy Dicks “Man Crow” who shares about the profoundly sacred Sun Dance Ceremony, practiced by many of the Great Plains Tribes each year on and/or around the June 21st summer solstice to pray for world renewal, healing and thanksgiving. It is one of the seven ceremonies brought to the Lakota Sioux tribe in particular from White Buffalo Woman, a spirt being who manifested to two Lakota hunters during a time of famine on the Great Plains. The story of White Buffalo woman’s prophetic message to the Lakota Tribe included that one day, she would return to the world and unite the four directions and four races of humanity including the white, black, yellow and read, in peace and harmony. When ceremonies become public arenas or open to the public via video feeds like this, where will the authenticity and sacred respect end up? On a booth at a pow-wow for sale, thats where! I do not take this serious if it can be equated with a Catholic mass or Christian baptism thats filmed and explained. Why does God always need to be sold, even if it predates Christianity?
One day, you will go to the Spirit World, how then will you be able to look Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull, and all of our Ancestotrs in the eye and explain how you sold out our ways??? This is exactly how the wasicus get their ideas to become self-proclaimed “shamans” and end up hurting and even killing people, as in the “Arizona Sweat Lodge”!
let the haters hate but i love this video he is telling people where to go for healing these are the sons of light which are going to over come the sons of darkness. this is medicine people. go to a sundance and pray join if you can pray for us people who are suffering. try hard and never be ashamed to speak publicly about you religion freedom of speach is always here love of the good creator is the light that will over come your darkness which makes me feel peace and have hope for life.
There’s nothing wrong with this video.. he just talking about it.. not like he showing it all…better him then a white poser who thinks he has a right to it…check out some vids on sweat lodge you would be disgusted of these people trying this……thank you for be true and finally a decent person tht’s actually native but does not give out to much information ..
the four directions and all the sacred colors remind us that we are all part of one world and all beings share a common experience. some dancers are of different races or mixed blood. there are many non-native people who go to sundances to help, learn, and support because it is such a powerful ceremony. they’re not always welcome. we all do that sort of thing in some way. at this time of great challenge i think we really really need to come together. i’m proof we can get along quite well
i understand the comments below. i have mi’kmaw blood (eastern coast canada), i also have french (and that’s a mix), prussian, and hebrew blood. i want to say this: the sundance is a native american ceremony and how the ceremony happens depends on those in charge (ie the sundance leaders). it is sacred and very strong. i don’t feel comfortable with any type of recording of sundances or danceers during any part of the ceremony.. ever. but is it wrong to share our story?
right on
