In April 2008, Brian Brunius, Jeanne Katz, and Deepa Awal attended the Gathering of Nations in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Among many other events was the spectacular Miss Indian World competition. Here are selected clips of the competition and the winner, Nicole Alek’aq Colbert, representing the Yup’ik Eskimo of Napakiak, Alaska.
BEAUTIFUL!!! I love it, thanks. What a sight to see, a beautiful representative for our Yupik peoples! Her performance was amazing and her crowning was even more so! Almost unbelievable that someone from such a small place would win such a title, just breathtaking! Quyana cakenvak Alek’aq for such an outstanding performance and great representation!
Love it when other Nations Get involved and teach our young. Really love it when we can share this with non Native’s. To show them we are no different, we all beleive in a greater power, just prey in a different way. Blessing’s to you all.
Lotsa of beautiful huares* here,….it is good to see so many beautiful red women,….we are still around and will be, the Great Spirit willing,….thumbs up to ya bbrunius and thankin’ ya for the AWESOME Vid!! = )
ethnic minorities must be saved from extinction! this case we speak about Native America (Native American, Apache, Cheyenne, Mapuche …..)
Governments must foster development. Only in this way, the original breed may have a chance to survive! We can not allow this noble breed
extinguished! W Red Power movement, W NOBLE native people, I love red leather. all tribes from the north to the south of the continent all together. against extinction
I remember back in the day, when my friend Gloria Snow won. I was watching her from half way up, with binoculars, and they read a bit of the essay from the winner, without announcing who it was. I saw her reaction as she recognized her essay, and knew it was her, so I started to totally SPAZ out all loud. Crying and laughing and yelling around…LMAO it was crazy!!
