Todays stories include: An update on the completion of the Angie Debo honoring sculpture at the Stillwater Oklahoma Public LIbrary and then a discussion with Citizen Band Potawatomi Nation of Oklahoma member Johnny Flynn an Assistant Professor of Religious Studies and American Indian Program Director at Indiana University – Indianapolis Campus on the impact of a growing trend towards dis-enrollment of tribal members for speaking up, challenging politicians or ask questions of their tribal leaders. Flynn’s cousin was dis-enrolled on Aug. 16, 2010 because she receives mineral royalty payments through heirship from another tribe she was not enrolled in.
Tribal corruption…….blamed on the white man but feeds into their very hands …… see “Tansi” newspaper, Toronto, Ontario now defunct due to exposing corruption within the native community…. and so it goes……. This is, to me, Native News at its best – a public call for justice to save the culture of a people from excesses and abuses. The story is especially poignant in that making sexual harassment filings illegal forces victims to resort to extralegal methods to obtain justice – the ultimate last recourse being violent confrontation as it was in the old days of AIM such as occurred at Wounded Knee. So it was also in the days of the American Revolution as well. Same old battle, different peoples,
